Introducing a *Free* Emetophobia Coloring Book: A Gentle ERP-Informed Resource
Emetophobia—the fear of vomiting or nausea-related sensations—can be isolating, overwhelming, and misunderstood. Many people find themselves avoiding foods, places, situations, and more “just in case,” constantly scanning their bodies for signs of sickness, or feeling anxious when exposed to anything related to vomit…even the words themselves.
I often tell my clients, avoiding the words is kind of like how the characters in Harry Potter (for those who have read the books or seen the movies) tiptoed around the name Voldemort by calling him “He Who Must Not Be Named.” Funny enough, the more something isn’t named, the larger the fear tends to feel!
As a therapist who frequently works with anxiety and avoidance patterns, I wanted to create something approachable, creative, and safe for clients and community members who struggle with this fear. That’s why I created a free Emetophobia Coloring Book, inspired by principles of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP helps us do the opposite of avoidance: say the word, face the thing, shrink the fear!
This resource invites you to interact with commonly feared words—like “throw up” or “puke,”—through the grounding activity of coloring. It’s meant to help you build tolerance and reduce avoidance gently and gradually, in a way that feels empowering, fun, and always at your own pace.
Coloring is never meant to replace therapy, however, it can be a supportive addition to your healing process, especially for those working on exposure-based goals, nervous system regulation, or distress tolerance.
